I read pretty much anything, from fantasy (City of Stairs by Robert Jackson Bennett) to romance (Bared to You by Sylvia Day) to classics (Heart of Darkness by Joseph Conrad). The only genres I don't read are self-help and comic books/graphic novels.
31/1 - Half my GR friends gave this two stars, the other half gave it four and I'm with them. I understood (but didn't enjoy, just to make it clear) the way Serena's rape was handled. It seemed pretty realistic to what would have actually happened, except it was happening to an out of the ordinary woman who was able to pull herself out of the normally life-ruining situation she had been forced into. To start with I didn't like Hugo and I didn't believe he was going to be the hero. I thought some dashing rescuer was going to come along, but it turned out Serena didn't need to be rescued, she was intelligent enough to bargain her way out on her own and I warmed up to Hugo. Serena's sister, Freddy (Frederica), was the opposite of a bright spark in the story, she was quite horrible and if I was Serena I would definitely abandon her to her agoraphobia and stubborn self-inflicted loneliness. I have the next book in the series, The Duchess War on my Kindle as well, so I will definitely look forward to reading that at some point in the future, especially since it was more universally liked among my aforementioned friends. I was lucky enough to pick this one up for free from Amazon.
